This humming, flashing blue forcefield appeared only once in the programme, during the quest of Barry Thorne (Team 7 of Series 7). The barrier had been set up by Lord Fear to prevent rival sorcerers, such as Grimaldine, from entering the citadel of Goth in Level 3. It did not appear to be very effective, as Barry later met the witch queen Greystagg who had somehow found a way past it!
Since the dungeoneer had no spells and was able to pass through the barrier unharmed, it served no real purpose and was seemingly included just to show off the CGI effect. A barrier of anti-magic also features in the 2010 fanfic The March of Progress, where it plays a considerably more important role.
